Visit Colleges This Summer!

Mrs. Soyen is the FLAG Korean Secretary at Keppel.  Her daughter is graduating from CV on Tuesday, and will be on her way to Pepperdine University in the FALL -- with a FULL SCHOLARSHIP!  When I see successful kids, I make it a point to ask their parents questions and to take note of the things that they've done to help their child  reach their goals.  Mrs. Soyen said that they started COLLEGE visits when her kids were in 7th grade.  They made a family rode trip out of it each summer.  I highly encourage you to do this with your family.

When I taught 4th grade, I would take a field trip to the UCLA campus just so the kids can get a glimpse what College looks like,  to give them an idea to why they are working so hard, and to see the final goal after attending school for 13 years.  This campus is very close and is a great campus to visit.
I believe they have 7 libraries and their computer lab is 4 story building (and students CHECK OUT LAPTOPS).  It's fun to visit their student center which includes restaurants, an arcade, FUN CENTER, a small hair salon, and more!  Kids also get a kick out of watching the college students ride their bikes and razor scooters from class to class.

I encourage you and your family can take the time to do this one summer.

When to Start those Campus Visits?

Parents frequently ask me when they should start taking their son or daughter on a round of college campus visits. I used to say ‘junior year’ – a standard response ‐‐ but a couple of years ago, I changed my tune. I’ve dropped back about 7 years – yes! Now when I’m asked about campus visits I strongly encourage 4th grade . . . if not age 4. Here’s why.
